Severe weather causes widespread damage, flooding in Omaha metro area

Widespread damage and flooding are reported in parts of the metro area after severe storms dropped heavy rain and large hail Tuesday evening.

Flooding prompted evacuations at 16th and Ames Avenue in Omaha. A shelter was opened at the Florence Community Center.

Baseball-size hail caused widespread damage and injuries in Washington County as the storm moved through Blair and Fort Calhoun. Hail up to three inches in diameter was reported in Saunders County Tuesday evening. Hail damaged vehicles at the Woodhouse Auto dealership in Blair.

The storm dropped more than three inches of rain in Omaha, causing flooding along Saddle Creek Road and in north Omaha. Flooding was also reported in Council Bluffs.

Eppley Airfield was closed for several hours.
