Sheila Hicks: Material Voices opens at Joslyn Art Museum June 5th

Sheila Hicks: Material Voices is on view at Joslyn Art Museum June 5th through September 4th.

Karin Campbell is the Joslyn’s Phil Willson Curator of Contemporary art and Curator of Material Voices.  Pieces on view in the exhibition vary in size and genre, from 5 by 9 inch intimate weavings to a 17 by 17 foot Moroccan rug.

Campbell says she spoke with Hicks about the best way to organize the artwork to contribute a different narrative with this exhibit.

The two decided on a thematic approach.  Campbell explains the show is more focused on the threads that find their way through Hicks’ work.

"One of which is the relationship her work has with architecture.  She has long had a fascination and a love for architecture that started her undergraduate studies in Yale University and has really extended to 2016.  So she was excited about our space and the fact it’s kind of an important building, Norman Foster’s first commission in the states.”

Artist Sheila Hicks was born in Hastings, Nebraska in 1934 but has lived in Paris since 1964.  Campbell says Hicks is arguably one of the most influential fiber artists of the 20th and 21st centuries

The Members Preview Day takes place on Saturday, June 4th.  Hicks will be in attendance that evening for a discussion with Campbell.
