The Shelterbelt Theatre wraps up its 23rd season, celebrates women

The Shelterbelt Theatre is wrapping up its 23rd season with a program called “Shattering the Glass: A Celebration of Women in Theatre”.

This production focuses on three one-act plays that were all written by women, have women directors, and female-led casts.

Keeping in line with their mission of focusing on locally produced talent, all of these women are from the Omaha area as well. Beth Thompson, the Shelterbelt Theatre’s artistic director, says she developed this show based on the lack of women in the theatre scene in Omaha.

"It’s an opportunity to say ‘hey ladies we hear we you, and we want you, and we want to hear your voices.’ So the scripts were written throughout this process and they’re directed by women as well. And I would say the motivation behind it is simply to do something about the gender parity issue that exists within theatre right now.”

Thompson says she feels both men and women will enjoy these plays and that she hopes other theaters in the area will start hiring and casting more women because of this.

“Shattering the Glass” runs through July 31st. For information on show times and tickets, the website is shelterbelt.org.
