Sierra Leone doctor dies of Ebola at Omaha hospital

Nebraska Medical Center doctors say they did all they could to try to save the life of a Sierra Leone surgeon who died of Ebola.

Dr. Martin Salia died early Monday morning in the biocontainment unit at Nebraska Medical Center. He was the third Ebola patient to be treated at NMC.

Dr. Daniel Johnson was part of the critical care team that treated Salia. He says when Salia arrived Saturday, he had no kidney function, was struggling to breathe, and was unresponsive.

"We really, really gave it everything we could, all modern medical therapies were provided, and we wish there could have been a different outcome but I’m also proud of the team for what they were able to try."

Salia received the same medical interventions as two previous patients treated at Nebraska Medical Center, including an experimental drug and convalescent serum. Hospital officials say he was already extremely ill when he arrived.

Salia was working as a surgeon at a Sierra Leone hospital when he tested positive for Ebola.
