Snow, wind give way to dangerous cold

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The Omaha metro area received several inches of snow from this week's winter storm. Now the concern is bitterly cold weather.

The National Weather Service says wind chill readings Wednesday and Thursday could hover around 15 to 20 degrees below zero. National Weather Service Omaha Meteorologist Scott Dergan says that can lead to serious health problems if you're not bundled up. "If you have to be outdoors, wear a hat and a scarf, and try to cover the face and hands especially. And always dress in layers, as that little air pocket between those layers of clothing actually helps to insulate the body."

Dergan says frostbite can set in within 30 minutes when the wind chill is 20 below and within ten minutes when the wind chill is 30 below. Symptoms of frostbite include numbness, discolored skin, and a cold or burning feeling.
