Some spending bills shelved as Unicameral prepares to wrap up its session

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Some spending bills are falling by the wayside as Nebraska lawmakers prepare to finish the legislative session next month.

Lawmakers are holding off on a bill that would reimburse farmers in the Republican River basin if they lose access to surface water. Another measure intended to promote small-scale wind farm development was shelved, in favor of a bill aimed at larger out-of-state wind farms.

Senator Heath Mello of Omaha, who heads the budget-writing Appropriations Committee, says lawmakers can still pass all of the bills that are waiting for a third and final vote. The proposals include new spending on foster care programs, locally focused juvenile services, and an airplane to help fight wildfires.

Lawmakers are set to adjourn on June 5th.
