Speaker to Discuss Immigration and International Social Connections

UNO’s Office of Latino/Latin American Studies is presenting a lecture by Cecilia Menjivar this morning at 11:30.

Menjivar, an El Salvador native and professor of sociology at Arizona State University, will discuss the effects of the contemporary immigration regime.

She says she will talk about how the current system of immigration law contributes to the reshaping of Latino immigrant families.

Menjivar says there are three ways she will look at this issue.

"Through the enforcement side, deportations and that kind of thing. That’s one way.  Another one is through the law itself and another way is the process of legalization itself.  These all contribute to the reshape dynamics within immigrant families.

Menjivar’s talk takes place from 11:30 to 1 in UNO’s Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom.  The event is free and open to the public.  In addition to refreshments, Spanish interpretation services will also be provided.
