Spring Walk to School Day

Wednesday, April 17th is the annual Spring Walk to School Day.

Angela Barry is the Safe Routes Nebraska state coordinator.

She says Walk to School Day is meant to celebrate the benefits of walking and biking to school.

Barry says Safe Routes Nebraska encourages kids and families to choose active transportation over driving.

Barry says studies have shown that kids who walk or bike to school are more alert and ready to learn when they get there.

She says schools may celebrate the day in any number of ways...

"Events going on around Nebraska involve groups of kids walking to school together.  Sometimes schools will do a week of wellness activities that includes special guests, healthy snacks and prizes.  But we also have many events that are very simple, just setting up walking groups or encouraging families to walk and bike to school.”
