State emergency management agency officials say because the flooding situation may change rapidly, it is not safe to sightsee in flooded areas.

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – The curious nature of some individuals may get them into trouble if they get too close to the flooded areas.

Earl Imler is the Operations Chief for the State Emergency Operations Center. He says some observers have been caught going around barricades though no one has been hurt so far. Imler says it's easy for sightseers to get into trouble by venturing into unsafe areas where the water may be deeper than anticipated. He says the biggest problem with gawkers is they interfere with the duties of those assigned to fighting the floods, "And when we've got individuals who are justifiably curious, but going into areas where they really shouldn't be, what you do is you create a situation where you're taking away from those people doing what they are assigned to be doing. They are monitoring levees and watching what's going on in a certain area. And when they are distracted from that, they could be missing something that they should be monitoring."
