Omaha, NE – A State Senator from Omaha is the fifth candidate to enter Nebraska's Second Congressional District race.

Senator Gwen Howard announced her candidacy Wednesday. Howard is currently serving her second term in the Nebraska Legislature. Prior to that, she worked for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Howard says her 34 years with HHS gives her a unique perspective. "I did adoptions, foster care, I worked with seniors, every segment of the social services program, and I think it gives you the ability to work with others regardless of what the circumstances are, and that's priceless."

Howard says jobs are her key campaign issue. "I'm not talking people who are going to be working three minimum-wage jobs, I'm talking jobs that allow people to support their families, provide some benefits for them so they can take vacation time off and be with their families, and so that they can have health coverage for their families."

Howard will face Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing in the primary next May.

In addition to Howard and Ewing, there are three Republican candidates for the Second Congressional District.
