Omaha, NE – A Nebraska State Senator has entered the 2012 U.S. Senate race.

State Senator Deb Fischer of Valentine declared her candidacy late last month. Fischer was elected to the Unicameral in 2004 and re-elected in 2008.

She says a key issue in her campaign is balancing the budget. "I support balancing the budget at the federal level just as we do at the state level. We've been able to accomplish that in the Legislature, we have to, it's required of us to do that. And it's necessary that we do that at the federal level too, it's making and setting priorities, deciding what government should be, deciding on what our money should be spent on."

Fischer says she brings a different perspective to the Senate race. She was born and raised in Lincoln, but has called Valentine home for the past 39 years.

Senator Ben Nelson has not yet announced if he'll seek re-election. State Treasurer Don Stenberg and Attorney General Jon Bruning are also running for Senate.
