Statewide smoking ban takes effect Monday

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Nebraska's statewide smoking ban becomes law Monday.

The law bans smoking in nearly all public places, including workplaces. Cigar bars are exempt from the legislation. It was passed in 2008.

Doug Clark, Division Chief of Environmental Health for the Douglas County Health Department, says a web site has been set up for the public to report possible violations. That web site is www.douglascountyhealth.com/living/smoking_form.php. Clark says the Health Department will investigate complaints and issue violation notices if needed. There's also a hotline set up by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to handle complaints. That number is 1-877-633-7331.

Clark says the smoking ban will improve the health of all Douglas County residents.
