LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill that would require suicide awareness and prevention training for Nebraska public-school employees has won initial approval in the Legislature.
Senators voted 29-0 on Tuesday to advance the measure. The bill would require at least one hour of training for school nurses, teachers, counselors, psychologists, administrators, social workers and other personnel.
It also would create a state-level school security director. The director within the Department of Education would provide and guidance and support to local school districts. Districts would have to provide the director with school safety plans.
The bill combines proposals by Sens. Amanda McGill of Lincoln and Rick Kolowski of Omaha.
