Survey Finds 12% of Nebraska Households Struggle to Afford Food

A recent Food Research and Action Center survey found that more than once in the past year, 12.8% of Nebraska families didn’t have enough money to put food on the table.

In Omaha, the results were even higher, with 15% of families having difficulty providing food for their families.

James Goddard of Nebraska Appleseed says the response is concerning.

He says the problem stems from individuals being paid inadequate wages and having a lack of access to education, so that they are not able to earn enough to get by.

"What we need to do is ensure people have a real opportunity to move ahead through better access to education and skills, particularly for adults that need extra skills, in order to get a job that is high enough paying and giving the benefits people need.”

Goddard says it’s also important to make sure food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, is strong so families can get the support they need to feed their family.
