Tax Study Public Hearing Set for Oct. 17th

The Nebraska Legislature’s Tax Modernization Committee’s next public meeting takes place October 17th.

The committee is holding a series of public hearings about Nebraska’s tax code.

Renee Fry, Executive Director at the Open Sky Policy Institute, says the committee wants to hear what the public thinks about income tax, sales tax and property tax.

Fry says the Open Sky Policy Institute is constantly reviewing the data and is focused on finding the policies that will do the most for Nebraska families and the state’s future.

"Right now what we are really supporting is to increase state aid for schools and other local governments.  We are 49th in the country in the amount of state aid that goes to our schools which means that our schools are heavily reliant on property taxes.  So by increasing state aid to local governments and school districts, we can actually reduce property taxes while at the same time addressing equity issues between schools that have property wealth and schools that don’t.”

The tax study public hearing takes place Thursday, October 17th from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
