A third case of mosquito-borne Zika Virus reported in Nebraska

A third case of travel-related Zika, a mosquito-borne virus, was reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Adi Pour, Director of the Douglas County Health Department, says the woman is in her 20s and had visited one of the countries where Zika transmission is occurring.

The woman had some symptoms, went to the doctor and tested positive.  Pour says there are a couple things she wants everyone to know.

If you are pregnant, the CDC recommends not traveling to Zika-affected countries.  This is because of the potential for a birth defect called microcephaly.

Pour says if you do travel, be sure to protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and using insecticide.

She says 80% of travelers who have Zika display no symptoms.

"When you return you should protect yourself locally from being infected with the mosquito bite because even if you are asymptomatic, you still carry the virus in your blood if you are infected.  If a mosquito bites you, it could bite another individual.  And if it’s the right mosquito that can transmit the virus, then that transmission could occur locally.”

Pour says the mosquitos that are transmitting the Zika virus have not been found in Douglas County.

But she says everyone should take the proper precautions to protect themselves if traveling to or returning from one of the affected countries.
