Top UNMC official assisting with Ebola outbreak response in Sierra Leone

UNMC

The dean of UNMC’s College of Public Health has returned to Sierra Leone to help with the response to recent Ebola cases there.

Dr. Ali Khan went to Sierra Leone July 12. He’ll be there for a month with a World Health Organization team. It’s the second time Dr. Khan has traveled to Sierra Leone to assist with the response to the Ebola outbreak. He spent six weeks in Sierra Leone earlier this year.

From June 29 to July 5, 27 cases of Ebola were reported in Sierra Leone and Guinea. More than 11,000 people in West Africa died in an outbreak of Ebola last year.

Last fall, Nebraska Medicine’s biocontainment unit treated three people who contracted Ebola in West Africa. One was from Sierra Leone.

UNMC and Nebraska Medicine will be part of a new National Ebola Training and Education Center.
