Travel Up Over Holiday Weekend

The 4th of July weekend is the busiest summer holiday period for travelers, according to AAA Nebraska.

Rose White, Public Affairs Director for AAA Nebraska, says the agency expects 40.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday week, which is defined as July 3-July 7.

White says there is a slight decrease in travel of less than 1% expected due to a shorter holiday period.

This year’s holiday encompasses five days where last year travelers had six days.

"Of those traveling, nearly 34.4 million or 84% will be traveling by car and another 3.1 million will travel by air.  The good news for those taking to the roadways is we’ve seen a steep decline in fuel prices.  Right now, the national average is $3.55.  Here in Nebraska, it’s $3.53.”

White reminds travelers that with summer travel comes more construction zones on the roadways.

She says motorists should always use caution when approaching these areas and give their surroundings their full attention.
