Two Omaha cancer centers named in honor of Dr. Henry Lynch

CHI Health

Cancer centers at two Omaha hospitals will be named in honor of a longtime Creighton University doctor and cancer researcher.

CHI Health announced Thursday that the centers at Immanuel and Bergan Mercy Medical Centers will be named the Henry Lynch Cancer Center.

Dr. Lynch has spent the past 50 years researching hereditary links to cancer. That research resulted in the identification of genes that can be be responsible for cancer in some cases. It was named Lynch Syndrome.

Lynch’s research led to the discovery of genes responsible for colon, breast, and ovarian cancers. In 1984, Dr. Lynch opened the Hereditary Cancer Center at Creighton University.

The discovery of Lynch Syndrome meant a person’s cancer risk could be predicted with a high degree of accuracy if they have the genetic mutations.
