UNeTech announces first four companies identified by institute

UNeTech is a new institute at UNMC and UNO that’s designed to identify promising start-up companies and help them become successful.

The institute recently chose its first four start-up companies.  The companies will be housed inside the UNeTech building at 39th and Harney and include FutureAssure, a company that uses new devices and software to assess patient frailty and Avert, a company that’s developed a program that determines if someone has sustained and recovered from a concussion.

Dr. Joe Runge, associate director of UNeTech, said UNeTech is not a venture capital fund, but a cluster of expertise focused on the health care field.

He explains UNeTech is an incubator focused on curating a very particular set of clinicians and researchers to help address problems faced by start-ups.

“UNeTech benefits UNMC by exposing faculty to a whole different kind of research that helps start-ups answer questions to improve access to health care.”

Runge says UNeTech is creating products people need to improve access to health care and contribute to the financial benefit for the university as well.

Over time, he says the building could accommodate as many as 10-12 start-up companies.
