United Way celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with Donation Drive

United Way of the Midlands is winding down its Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service this weekend.

Deidra Calloway, Director of Community Engagement for United Way of the Midlands, says UWM’s intention was to create an opportunity for people to get involved with and support their community in a non-traditional way.

Calloway says most people are used to going to a physical location and participating in some kind of intensive labor project.

She says with people just coming off the craziness of the holidays, this year the United Way decided to make it easier and simpler for people to help others.

"We decided to select a few non-profits, inquired about their needs, those that would be willing to receive any items we collected. So with that we decided to do a donation drive.  So this week we ask people to pick an agency, take a look at their agency wish list and collect those items this week.  They’ll be dropped off next week.”

Calloway says items needed include things like books and cold weather clothing.  A list of the participating non-profits’ wish lists are available online at www.UnitedWayMidlands.org/mlk.
