UNMC, 19 medical schools nationwide chosen for training and innovation program

UNMC is one of 20 medical schools nationwide that’ll be part of a collaboration focusing on training and innovation. It’s an American Medical Association program called the Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium.

Dr. Kelly Caverzagie, UNMC’s associate dean for educational strategy in the College of Medicine, says the initiative recognizes that health care has changed in the 21st century, and physicians must adapt as well.

"The idea behind this initiative is to help accelerate and to make sure we’re training physicians who can better practice in the 21st century. We need to be able to train physicians to better practice to meet the needs of patients and populations in to the future, as opposed to the way we’ve historically treated them in the past."

Each school in the consortium received a $75,000 grant. UNMC will use theirs for training that focuses on putting interprofessional education in to practice.

Dr. Caverzagie says they’ll train medical students to think and work as a team.
