UNMC and Purdue Pharma partnership to help students, researchers and patients

A new partnership between UNMC and Purdue Pharma, LP will increase graduate student research opportunities and hopefully bring some UNMC researchers’ drug therapies to market sooner.

One focus-area of the privately-owned Purdue Pharma is research and development into safer opioids for chronic pain.  Dr. Jennifer Larsen, Vice Chancellor for Research at UNMC, says this partnership shows UNMC’s commitment to understanding pain and trying to develop treatments that help patients avoid substance abuse.

By having partnerships with investigators who are in the industries, it’s another way of increasing our capacity and hopefully speeding the ability of taking some of our intellectual property to commercialization.”

Additionally, a new Purdue Pharma Scholar program will provide three graduate tuition scholarships a year to UNMC students doing research in neuroscience and pain.  The recipients will have access to Purdue Pharma researchers and facilities and the chance to present their own research at an annual Purdue PharmaNeurosciences Conference at UNMC.
