UNMC, Nebraska Medicine yield large economic impact

A study recently released shows UNMC and Nebraska Medicine have an economic impact on the state’s economy of $4.2 billion annually.

Tripp Umbach, a nationally recognized consulting firm, studied fiscal year 2013-2014.

The study report includes UNMC, Nebraska Medicine and the work that employees from those organizations do for affiliates like the VA and Children’s Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Jeffrey Gold, UNMC Chancellor, says UNMC helps improve the human condition through economic impact.

He says one of every $25 that goes into the gross state product comes directly from the UNMC campus.

"One out of 35 jobs in the state is also on the campus or on one of the UNMC or Nebraska Medicine satellites. That’s a direct effect.  And if we look back historically, there was a similar study done 10 years ago and it shows those numbers have actually doubled over the last 10 years.”

Dr. Gold says UNMC and Nebraska Medicine’s primary goal is to improve the lives of Nebraskans through clinical care, education, research and community outreach.
