UNMC oncologist chairs committee to develop new guidelines for cancer patients

Dr. Peter Coccia, a pediatric oncologist with UNMC, served as chairman of a committee that recently developed guidelines for cancer patients between the ages of 15 and 39.

Dr. Coccia says about a year ago guidelines were developed through the National Comprehensive Cancer Network or NCCN, for physicians and their assistants.

He says those guidelines have now been translated specifically for patients.

Dr. Coccia says the guidelines are useful for patients, their families and their lay caregivers.

"It has extensive information about diagnosis and all of the issues, getting second opinions, recommending that treatment be given at a center that has experience dealing with adolescents and young adults with cancer.”
