UNMC opens Maurer Center for Public Health

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The University of Nebraska Medical Center has a new College of Public Health.

The $15 million Maurer Center for Public Health opened Wednesday. It's named for UNMC Chancellor Dr. Harold Maurer and his wife, Beverly. The College of Public Health is UNMC's first new college since 1968.

Chancellor Maurer says the College will focus on several key areas of public health. "In this new facility, our College of Public Health faculty will collaborate to increase the odds that everyone will make healthy choices to prevent disease and promote health. In this new facility, we will bring together a multitude of disciplines to find solutions to chronic health conditions that afflict the citizens of Nebraska and beyond."

Among the health issues Center for Public Health faculty hope to address are childhood obesity, environmental health, and disparities in health care.
