UNMC works to heal the whole person with an integrative approach

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is getting a new building which is set to open in the first quarter of 2017.

Director Dr. Ken Cowan says the new facility will include a healing arts program.

Cowan says UNMC is working with a patient advisory committee to help decide what type of art would be most beneficial to the patients.

He says in addition to paintings and sculptures, the healing arts program will also incorporate music and poetry.  Cowan says they would also like to incorporate art therapy for patients as well.

"So it’s going to be an all-inclusive program, something about the art that goes on the building and hangs on the wall that people actually have a chance to look at.  And the incorporation of the new healing arts garden, a place for nature to be integrated into the new facility in a way that really benefits everybody.”

Cowan says everyone knows there are positive benefits to the arts.  He says art is inspirational and can provide an invaluable way for people to relax.
