UNO Celebrates the 4th of July with its annual Carillon Concert

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – UNO will present its annual Carillon Concert on the 4th of July at 9:00 a.m.

UNO spokesman Tim Kaldahl says this year's carilloneur will be graduate student Shannon Richard. Richard had expressed interest in learning how to play the carillon and Kaldahl says she's been practicing for many afternoons on campus.

Kaldahl says the carillon is housed in the clock tower on campus. He says the carilloneur is actually near the top of the bell tower and plays a keyboard- like device that, instead of "plinking away at keys on a piano like you would with your finger, you're using your fists and your feet to play a large-scale keyboard."

The Carillon Concert is free, will last about 30 minutes and features patriotic favorites. Kaldahl says people are welcome to bring chairs and snacks. Concert goers may sit on the grassy area between the Criss Library and the Strauss Performing Arts Center.
