UNO Chancellor John Christensen announces retirement

John Christensen is the first UNO alumnus to serve as Chancellor of the university.

Last Monday, he announced he will be stepping down after 10 years in the leadership role.  He will stay on though until his successor is named.

After that, Christensen will continue working at the university on special projects for the next few years.

Christensen says collaboration and partnerships have been the key to transforming UNO into a premier urban metropolitan university.

He says UNO continues to learn more about how the university can serve the community.

"I’m looking forward to spending time with people in the community as well, learning from them about how it is our faculty, staff, students, teaching, learning and research can help with tomorrow’s leaders and also help with the economic development within the city and the state.”

During his tenure, UNO has celebrated back-to-back records for the largest and most diverse incoming classes in the university’s history, been named the No.1 Military Friendly University in the nation by Military Times two years in a row and completed more than $480 million of capital projects, including the Baxter Arena.

Christensen was named Interim Chancellor on September 12, 2006.  He was officially named UNO’s 14th Chancellor on May 8, 2007.  Christensen is the first UNO alumnus to serve as Chancellor.
