UNO Closer to Opening New Arena

A unanimous vote earlier this month by the Omaha City Council means UNO is one step closer to building a new arena.

The new space will be located southwest of 64th Avenue and West Center Road.

At the July 2nd meeting, the Omaha City Council approved a preliminary plat which gives UNO and the city permission to discuss specific zoning issues in the area.

UNO Chancellor John Christensen said the new arena will be the home for Maverick Hockey.

"We are going to be able to add financial stability to the athletic department.  Currently hockey provides about 94% of the revenue.  This is going to allow us to provide a lift in that regard.”

Chancellor Christensen said the arena will also serve student government and organizations in terms of campus events.

It’ll also be the home for commencements and convocations.

Construction of the University/Community arena is planned to start in late 2013 with an expected completion date of June 2015.
