UNO receives $1 million grant for inmate re-entry program

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – A $1 million grant will help the University of Nebraska-Omaha continue an inmate re-entry program.

The program is called the Transformation Project. It just began its second year. Last year, 21 inmates at the Omaha Correctional Center took weekly classes on topics such as education, employment, social interaction, physical and mental health, and housing. Inmates also study the life and teachings of civil rights leader Malcolm X.

UNO officials hope to expand the program this summer to the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. Omaha native John Morgan, the CEO of Minneapolis-based Winmark Corporation, made the $1 million donation.
