UNO welcomes a freshman class of 2000 for the 2011-2012 school year

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – UNO's freshman class numbers 2000 for the current school year. Assistant Director of Media Relations Wendy Townley says new this year, incoming freshmen will participate in a Freshman Convocation.

The 45-minute ceremony happens at Noon today (Friday) in the Sapp Fieldhouse. Townley says freshmen will hear from administrators and faculty as well as group of Sensational Sophomores, who all have a GPA of 3.75 or higher. While the ceremony celebrates their academic success, it also provides freshmen with the faces of students who have successfully completed their first year of college

Townley says, "For years, UNO has done a really good job embracing non-traditional students. Students that are maybe over the age of 25, commuter students. But in the past couple years with the addition of student housing on campus, we are seeing a more traditional age student and we really want to embrace those students. We really want to welcome them on campus and really get them on the right track to go through their degree program and graduate."

Other changes this year include the renovation of Roskens Hall, now the home for the College of Education and the addition of Scott Court, the fifth student housing development on the Pacific Street campus.
