U.S. Navy Lieutenant plans cross-country bicycle ride

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – A Navy Lieutenant stationed at Offutt Air Force Base is preparing for a cross-country bicycle ride to benefit the American Red Cross. Lieutenant Jeffrey Greene is a Red Cross Volunteer and a planning officer for U.S. Stratcom. He plans to leave March 10 from Oceanside, California for the bike ride. The bike ride is expected to last two and a half months and end in Buffalo, New York, in May.

Lieutenant Greene says he completed one cross-country bicycle ride in 1999. After serving as a submarine officer in the Navy and coming to Offutt Air Force Base two years ago, he began planning for another trip, this time with a charitable component.

His fundraising goal is $10,000 and so far, Lieutenant Greene has already raised $6,000. All the donations raised will go the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter and to the Greater Buffalo, New York Area Red Cross, his hometown.

Lieutenant Greene says he's preparing for the trip by working out at home. He also teaches group cycling classes at the Sarpy County YMCA and at Offutt.

He'll be documenting his trip on a web site, www.rideforred.com. He's also accepting donations through that web site.
