VA to hold public meeting about national cemetery project

A public meeting Tuesday afternoon in Omaha focuses on a new VA national cemetery planned for Sarpy County.

The meeting with VA officials is at 1pm Tuesday. VA of Nebraska-Western Iowa spokesman Will Ackerman says the meeting is to update veterans about the timeline for the project.

"It’s going to be a 230 acre parcel in Sarpy County, along Highway 50 and Schram Road, and will serve approximately 112,000 veterans, their spouses, and eligible dependents who live in Omaha or within a 75 mile radius."

VA officials estimate construction will begin in 2015 and take about two years to complete. Burial sites at the new VA cemetery will open up eight to nine months after construction begins.

Tuesday’s meeting will be held at the Homewood Suites in Omaha.
