The VA Welcomes Home Vets

The VA’s Welcome Home and Military Appreciation Night Event takes place this Friday in Grand Island.

The annual event rotates among Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island.  Among the activities for veterans attending this year’s event is a football game featuring the Nebraska Danger Football organization.

Will Ackerman is Spokesman for the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System.

He says the event is meant to thank veterans for their service and to connect them with resources.

"Women Veteran Health Programs, Homeless Programs, the Vet Center as well as the Veterans Benefit Office.  We also have a lot of other vendors that aren’t VA offices but may provide some sort of community veterans’ services.  We’ve got a transition assistance advisor who is with the Nebraska Guard and works directly with the returning vet.”

Ackerman says the goal is to provide a one-stop shop of information for veterans so they can learn what benefits are available to them.

He says there will be colleges and other agencies present that have specific veterans’ benefits as well.  Information is available at www.nebraska.va.gov.
