VA/HUD Homeless Housing Program Expanded

The Nebraska-Western Iowa VA Health Care Systemhas a partnership program with HUD.

Linda Twomey, Program Director with the Nebraska-Western Iowa VA, says the program, called HUD-VASH, provides Section 8 vouchers to chronically homeless veterans.

The VA offers case management services within that program.

Twomey says HUD recently announced that additional funds will go toward expanding the HUD-VASH program.

"These vouchers will be used by veterans that the VA finds through street outreach or through other homeless programs.  The program is targeted for veterans who are chronically homeless, which means veterans who have been living on the streets or in a shelter or in an uninhabitable place for one year or more continuously or they’ve had four episodes of homelessness in the past three years.”

Twomey says the program will provide 50 more vouchers in the Omaha metro area and an additional 10 vouchers in the Lincoln area.

She says on any given night, there are a couple of hundred homeless veterans in Nebraska.
