The VA's Summer of Service Open House is this morning

The VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System is hoping to recruit more volunteers from the community.

As part of this effort, they are hosting an open house called Summer of Service this morning from 8:30 to 11.

Will Ackerman is Public Affairs Officer for the VA’s Nebraska-Western Iowa.  He says volunteers are important to what the VA does outside of its healthcare scope.

"We have a guy that takes a cookie cart up to our inpatient floors and makes cookies for them right there.  It’s wonderful.  We have volunteers who sit at the information desk.  We have volunteers who assist other veterans and do a number of different things.”

Ackerman says VA staff will be giving tours of the medical center throughout the morning.

He says the Summer of Service is an initiative taking place across the entire Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Summer of Service takes place at the Omaha VA Medical Center Education Conference Room, 4101 Woolworth Avenue.
