Verification of recall signatures underway

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The process of verifying signatures submitted by the Mayor Suttle Recall Committee is underway.

Committee members turned in about 37,600 signatures Friday afternoon. Election Commissioner Dave Phipps says he and a staff of 20 are working to verify those signatures. That involves matching each signature against voter registration records. Each petition page has to be correctly signed and notarized as well.

Phipps says questionable signatures are marked as pending and further reviewed. He says generally, five to ten-percent of signatures are thrown out. The deadline for verification is December fourth.

If 26,643 or more signatures are verified at the end of the process, Phipps says the city will be notified and Mayor Suttle will have five days to resign. If that doesn't happen, a recall election would be set for mid to late January.
