Veteran designation available in Iowa

Iowa veterans may now request that a “Veteran” designationbe placed on their driver’s license or non-operator ID.

The move follows legislation that passed last session.

The word veteran will be printed in red on the front of the license or ID.

Jodi Tymeson, Executive Director for the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, says this was a grassroots effort put together by veterans.

Veterans may apply for the designation when obtaining a new license or renewing an old one.

"Ahead of when their license is due, they should go to their county veterans’ affairs office and just have their veteran status certified by that office.  Then they should take the form to their local DOT licensing station.”

Tymeson says veterans who have never been to their county VA office should also take the opportunity to find out what benefits they're entitled to.
