Learning how to buy healthy food at the store while still maintaining your budget is the focus of a program the VNA is holding this Saturday.
Cooking Matters at the Store will teach individuals how to read and compare food nutrition labels, buy fresh produce on a budget and how to choose whole grains.
Anna Curry, Cooking Matters Class Coordinator, says the store tour lasts about an hour and a half.
"Then at the end of the tour we do a fun activity called “The $10 Challenge,” where all participants get to make a meal for $10 and they have to include every food group and try to get as much as they can for their money. And they actually get a gift card to purchase those items to take home. So it’s a little bit of hands-on learning experience and then they get to go home with $10 in healthy groceries.”
Tours in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area take place at six different HyVee stores and are led by store nutritionists.
Curry says advanced registration is required to attend the event.
