Volunteer Coordination Center set up in Council Bluffs

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – A Volunteer Coordination Center has been set up in Council Bluffs.

Council Bluffs Fire Chief Alan Byers, who's leading the city's flood response efforts, says First Christian Church is now handling all volunteer requests. He says anyone wanting to volunteer should now call 712-325-4736. "This number will be answered from eight to six Monday through Friday. Any one individual who would like to register to volunteer for it, being sandbags or any other activity, is asked to call this number."

A city spokesman says 150 people are signed up to volunteer this week and next. Art Hill says the city needs more volunteers for morning activities.

The Missouri River is above 33 feet at Council Bluffs. That's four feet over flood stage.
