Wind energy report recommends upgrades to power grid, investments in technology

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – A new report on wind energy development says 300,000 jobs could be created in that industry by 2025.

The Governors' Wind Energy Association released the report, titled "Great Expectations," earlier this week. The coalition of 29 Governors wants a national standard that ensures 25 percent of U.S. power comes from renewable sources by 2025.

Iowa Governor Chet Culver is Chairman of the Governors' Wind Energy Association. He says that national standard can be achieved in part by upgrading and modernizing the nation's power grid. Culver says doing so will bring the power grid in to the 21st Century and provide consumers with inexpensive, reliable energy.

The American Wind Energy Association says Iowa is second in the nation for wind energy production. Nebraska is sixth on the association's list of top 20 states for wind energy potential.
