Work underway on Council Bluffs School District athletic complex

Council Bluffs Community School District officials hope to have the first phase of a new athletic complex project done next month.

The $15.2 million project includes new athletic fields, a new track, scoreboard, and parking. Phase one is a new football field. Superintendent Martha Bruckner hopes that project will be done in time for the start of high school football.

She says the athletic complex will replace aging facilities.

"We have some great, great employees who have tried their best to keep these 50-year-old facilities in tip-top shape. But that’s hard, especially in a low-lying area like we have, and with grass turf. So they’re old, they’re just worn out after 50 years of use."

Bruckner says the school district wants to share the facilities with the community. The next phase of work involves baseball and softball fields. Soccer fields will follow that.

About $13 million has been raised for the athletic complex project.
