Young: fiscal responsibility, balanced budget needed

The Iowa Secretary of State’s office says voter turnout on Tuesday was 53 percent.

Republican David Young was elected to the Third Congressional District seat currently held by Tom Latham. Young defeated Democratic candidate Staci Appel 53 percent to 42 percent.

Young says he wants to focus in Congress on a balanced budget and accountability.

"When you don’t have budgets, all you’ve done is double the national debt. We’re almost at 18 trillion dollars, and we need fiscal discipline. Families balance their budgets, farmers, businesses do, the United States of America needs to balance its budget. So I want to make sure that we are watching our spending, and I also want to make sure that we get the economy going at full force and there’s certainty out there in it."

Young says he supports House Speaker John Boehner’s priorities to address the Affordable Care Act and the Keystone XL pipeline.

Young spent seven years as a Chief of Staff to U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.
