This gathering of total professionals creates a smoking session!

Meeting Billie Holiday

Nov 8, 2013

During my next semester at Temple University in Philadelphia, 1955, I learned that WFLN was looking for announcers and decided to audition. Yes, the WFLN. Which I had often heard as a student at Swarthmore. After all, I knew something about classical music, knew fairly well how to pronounce a few languages or to sound as if I did. Moreover I had a pleasant, resonant microphone-ready, normally- required speaking voice…...

Phil Woods’ soulful brilliance glows everywhere you turn in this 2013 release from Chiaroscuro Records . His soloing on alto, his compositions and arrangements sparkle throughout, enhanced by a fine array of soloists hailing from parts of the U.S. east. But, be warned; listening to it all at one sitting could diminish the effect.  It’s like trying to consume too many slices of a superb and rich birthday cake when the party’s just started. Don’t take in too many pieces at once. Savor the flavor gradually.

Veteran jazz bassist Dave Holland is back with one of his boldest sessions in years. Fans of his straight ahead jazz recordings may be startled to hear the relentless intensity of Prism, but it shouldn't be surprising given Holland's roots in the electric jazz explosion of the late 1960s.

Introducing Gordon Spencer

Oct 1, 2013

Veteran radio personality Gordon Spencer will present Friday's Jazz in the Afternoon on KIOS starting October 18. Spencer has been hosting jazz radio broadcasts continuously since 1976.

From childhood on Gordon Spencer’s life has been full of music. He was in the audience during Philadelphia Orchestra Children’s Concerts, his father up there on stage playing viola. At home little Gordon delighted in recordings of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Ravel, Debussy. And was baby-sat while his father played Mozart and Haydn string quartets with friends.

Our CD of the Month at KIOS is from legendary pianist and bandleader Chick Corea. His latest release, The Vigil, features a new lineup of players along with the keyboard legend in an energetic program that recalls Corea's legendary group Return To Forever.

For the 11th consecutive year KIOS will air highlights of the Detroit Jazz Festival prior to Labor Day Weekend.  Highlights of  the 2012 gathering will air on the afternoons of Thursday August 29th and Friday August 30th at 2:00PM. The programs are hosted by Ed Love of WDET and Linda Yohn of WEMU.

The tribute will be hosted by Marian's longtime friend Murray Horowitz and will feature Marian's compositions and collaborations with Sarah Vaughan, Karrin Allyson, Elvis Costello and many more.

Marian McPartland died on Tuesday at her home in Port Washington, N.Y. She was 95.

Etienne Charles is a trumpeter from Trinidad whose three previous albums have featured calypso music as interpreted through an engaging post-bop focus. Charles continues to grow as an artist as evidenced on his latest, Creole Soul.  His latest recording reflects his interest in Carribean music and the music of New Orleans.

A new release by a Chicago-based outfit headed by tenor saxophonist
Shelly Yoelin is an intoxicating mix of straight ahead bop, ballads and Latin
sounds. Five of the seven members provide material. The highlights include
Diddley Dance, the Bo Diddley beat would be right at home in New Orleans.
Beautiful Sweetheart, composed by pianist Bobby Schiff is a lovely ballad
dedicated to his wife Natasha. Eastern Fun incorporates Klezmer music into
the mix. One of the highlights of the year so far.

In the last ten years a number of jazz artists have released recordings that attempt to fuse jazz and country music; these efforts have yielded results of varying success.  Guitarist Corey Christiansen's latest effort is without doubt an exception.

The new release from bassist and bandleader McBride is a straight-ahead affair with an acoustic group consisting of Steve Wilson on alto sax, Warren Wolf on vibes , Peter Martin on six of the eight tracks on piano with Christian Sands on the others. Carl Allen handles the drum duties on most of the session and Ulysses Owens Jr. filling in on two tracks.

For Jazz Appreciation Month, KIOS presents the SFJazz Center Opening Night Concert on Wednesday April 17th at 8:00PM. San Francisco has been a jazz hot spot for decades and now the city is home to the first stand-alone building built specifically for jazz. It's the new 700 seat SFJazz Center.

Giacomo Gates – Miles Tones – Savant SCD 2124

The music of Miles Davis, so firmly entrenched in the instrumental heart and soul of jazz music, has also been embellished with lyrics in several instances. Vocalist Giacomo Gates' latest release gathers a variety of these selections and serves them with his inimitable stylings and superb musical accompaniment.

The music of Miles Davis was changing dramatically in the late 1960s. Most fans of the legendary trumpeter know that in 1969 he recorded Bitches Brew, the hugely successful dawn of jazz-rock that was one of the best selling jazz records ever released. Lesser known is the working unit that Miles took with him on the road was one of the most artistically daring and visionary bands that Miles ever led. Recordings of that outfit have recently surfaced and have been released on a multi-disc set, Live In Europe 1969, The Complete Bootleg Sessions Vol. 2.

Guitarist John Pizzarelli will return to Omaha in February.  Two performances with the Omaha Symphony, Thomas Wilkins, conducting, will be presented on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 8 p.m. &  Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Holland Performing Arts Center.

KIOS will once again air Toast of The Nation to ring in the New Year. The annual broadcast will begin New Year's Eve, December 31st at  8:00PM. An NPR tradition every New Year's since 1979, Toast of the Nation is perfect for the occasion. It's jazz you can party to, all night from coast to coast, with countdowns to midnight in all four continental time zones.Spirited, improvised, grooving, and swinging, each segment is a stop in a sequence of celebrations and contributing something new to the musical feast. WBGO's Rhonda Hamilton anchors the show.
