Jazz Junction

Saturdays, 8pm - 11pm
with Rick Erben

Welcome to the Jazz Junction on KIOS-FM.

This is your Saturday nighttime host who has been broadcasting the inspired sounds of  jazz music for twenty three years now at KIOS-FM. And so it is between eight and eleven pm when we turn up the burners in the jazz kitchen and begin cooking a batch of sounds aimed at your musical sensitivities. The general idea is to embrace a wide expanse of recorded music from classic sessions in jazz through the wealth of recent releases. Thus you will hear music from the great names in this music as well as from the exciting aritsts comprising today's virile jazz scene. We try to provide a diverse mix of music with straight-ahead and Afro-Latin beats; cookers and ballads; and groups from small combos to big bands in a variety of instrumental and vocal settings. From time to time you'll hear music that has never been issued since the original LP as we spin some vinyl. And that's Our Thing at the Jazz Junction. I invite you to tune-in and savor the sounds as well roll down the jazz tracks every Saturday night beginning at 8pm.

CD of the Month: LEWIS NASH – THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN – Cellar Live

Drummer Lewis Nash leads a quintet at the Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, BC from September of 2011. First call musicians share the stage in the persons of Jeremy Pelt, trumpet and flugelhorn, Jimmy Greene, tenor and soprano saxophones, Renee Rosnes, piano and Peter Washington, bass. This engagement at Cory Weeds' Jazz Club exhibits the loose spontaneity of straight-ahead jazz. There's formidable talent to burn, and burn they do in a wide-ranging program including compositions by Bobby Hutcherson, Renee Rosnes, Clifford Jordan, Ornette Coleman, Thad Jones and Thelonious Monk.

Jazz Junction Top Ten Picks For 2011

Miles Davis – Live in Europe 1967 – Columbia/Legacy

The great Miles Davis Quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams is documented in several fine studio albums, however, live recordings of this band are rare and isolated to the Live at the Plugged Nickle recordings and a number of privately recorded albums of mediocre quality. Now a series of live recordings from a European tour in the fall of 1967, previously only appearing piecemeal on bootlegs, has been issued by Columbia/Legacy in a three disc CD and one disc DVD collection.
