Omaha receives IBM Smarter Cities Challenge Grant

Omaha is one of eight U.S. cities to receive a Smarter Cities Challenge Grant this year from IBM.

IBM awarded Smarter Cities Challenge grants to 33 cities worldwide. The grant brings a team of IBM analysts to the city for three weeks. In Omaha, the team will study redevelopment in the city’s east and northeast neighborhoods.

New report shows 1 in 7 Nebraskans struggle to buy enough food for their families

 

A new report shows one in seven Nebraskans experienced food hardship last year.

The report from the Food Research and Action Center shows 17 percent of households in the Second Congressional District struggled to buy enough food to feed their families.

Eco-tourism focus of upcoming conference of Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado Governors

Economic development and eco-tourism are the focus of a conference next Friday in Nebraska.

Governor Dave Heineman announced Monday he’ll meet with Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. The meeting is, in part, an opportunity for the three Governors to view the sandhill crane migration. Gov. Heineman says it's also a chance for the three Governors to discuss economic development, water use, and what each state can learn from the other.

Omaha is among the best cities in the U.S. for jobs, according to Forbes Magazine.

Forbes released its list last month of best cities for jobs, with Omaha ranked seventh. Last year, Omaha was named as a top city for startup businesses.

Community development, inclusion and leadership among topics of Omaha Young Professionals Summit

Omaha’s young professionals will gather next week for an event focused on their community.

The event happens next Wednesday, February 29,  at the CenturyLink Center. Last year, Forbes Magazine named Omaha as one of the top cities for young professionals. Omaha also made Forbes’ list of most affordable cities.

Among the topics are community development, leadership, building a a personal brand, and social media. Author and designer Bruce Mau is the keynote speaker.

Omaha ends 2011 budget year with projected $740,000 deficit

The city of Omaha ended 2011 with a $740,000 budget deficit.

City officials released the preliminary fourth quarter financial report Thursday. The report says Omaha’s lack of a new contract with the fire union cost the city two million dollars. The City Council rejected a new contract with the fire union last year. Since then, a ruling from the Commission of Industrial Relations cost the city of Omaha $3.2 million.

Douglas County Board opposed to legislation ending inheritance tax

Douglas County Commissioners say taxpayers could be forced to pay more if the state of Nebraska does away with its inheritance tax.

During his State of the State address, Governor Dave Heineman told lawmakers he wants the inheritance tax to end. The inheritance tax is based upon the fair market value of a property at the time of a person’s death. The amount of tax paid varies depending on the relationship between the deceased and the person who inherits the property.

Jobs, immigration, and foreign policy were among the topics in the first debate of the Second Congressional District race.

 Democratic candidates John Ewing and Gwen Howard debated Friday night at the Douglas County Democratic Party’s annual Truman Dinner. Ewing is Douglas County Treasurer. Howard is serving her second term as State Senator.

Gallup Chairman and CEO Jim Clifton and Gov. Dave Heineman to speak at the Chamber's Annual Luncheon

Omaha, NE – The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce is holding its annual meeting luncheon on Wednesday, February 1st.

David Brown is Chamber President and CEO. He says awards that'll be given out at the luncheon include the Chairman's Award of Excellence and Volunteer of the Year. He says the meeting is for anyone who's interested in how communities grow and what Omaha needs to do to make sure there are enough jobs here for future generations.

Brown says Governor Dave Heineman is one of two guest speakers at this year's luncheon.
