Two OPS schools recognized for environmentally-conscious efforts

 

Two Omaha schools are among the Department of Education’s green ribbon schools.

Lothrop Magnet Center and Miller Park Elementary received the designations last week. The Department of Education says green ribbon schools are those that practice sustainability, implement recycling and other environmentally-friendly programs, and promote health.

Pam Galus of Lothrop Magnet Center says the school participates in several environmentally-friendly activities, including composting of plant materials, recycling, and collecting eyeglasses.

Creighton University Finance Program Ranked in Top 20 in Nation

The U.S. News & World Report 2012 Department of Finance ranked Creighton University’s college of business finance program 19th in the nation.

Anthony Hendrickson, Dean to the College of Business, says the program is up two points from last year.  He says Creighton boasts more Certified Financial Analyst charter holders on its faculty than any other institution in the world. 

Hendrickson says he thinks the visibility of the master’s in security analysis has attracted a lot of attention.

New OPS superintendent to begin work July first

Nancy Sebring will take over July 1 as the Omaha Public Schools’ new superintendent.

The OPS board unanimously approved Sebring’s contract Wednesday afternoon. She’ll receive a $275,000 base salary, plus $12,000 for transportation expenses and an annuity equal to 14 percent of her salary. The contract does not include bonuses.

OPS board president Freddie Gray says she’s confident Sebring will transition smoothly in to her new role as superintendent.

South High School celebrates 50 years of show choir

Omaha South High School’s Ambassadors Show Choir is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

A 50 year reunion concert is scheduled for Saturday evening at South High School. The Ambassadors Show Choir began in 1962 as the Choralaires. Among the 100 participants in this weekend’s reunion show are members of that choir.

Bill to reduce size of OPS board off the table

Legislation that would cut the size of the Omaha Public Schools board to seven members is off the table in the Nebraska Legislature.

Senator Scott Lautenbaugh, the bill’s sponsor, pulled the measure Tuesday  night after other lawmakers threatened to filibuster it. Lautenbaugh’s legislation originally called for reducing the board to five members. It was amended to seven. The bill has been sent back to the Unicameral's Government, Military, and Veterans' Affairs Committee.

OPS board chooses Des Moines schools leader as new superintendent

The superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools is OPS’ choice for its new leader.

The OPS board voted Monday to hire Nancy Sebring as superintendent. Sebring has served as superintendent in Des Moines for the past six years. 11 board members voted in favor of Sebring, with board member Nancy Kratky not voting.

Sebring will take over following the retirement of John Mackiel at the end of this school year.

The OPS board will meet Monday night in closed session to discuss the terms of Sebring’s contract.

OPS meeting Monday to discuss, possibly vote on new superintendent

The Omaha Public Schools board has a special meeting Monday at noon to discuss and possibly vote on a superintendent candidate finalist.

OPS held public meetings last week with the three superintendent candidates. Wednesday, OPS’ current Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Learning, ReNae Kehrberg, took questions. Thursday’s meet and greet was with Daniel Nerad, superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District in Wisconsin. Last Friday, Des Moines Public Schools superintendent Nancy Sebring took questions on the achievement gap, leadership, and testing.

OPS board to name superintendent candidate finalists Tuesday

The Omaha Public Schools board meets Tuesday morning to name its superintendent candidate finalists this week.

Board members interviewed four candidates Saturday in an all-day, closed-door session. A meeting is set for 8:30 AM Tuesday to announce the three finalists. They'll be interviewed starting Friday.

Whoever is named superintendent will take over following John Mackiel's retirement at the end of this school year. Mackiel has been with OPS for nearly four decades.

Five UNO Grad Programs Rank in Top 20 Nationally

US News and World Report has ranked five UNO graduate programs in the top 20 nationally.

John Bartle is the Acting Dean for the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at UNO.  He says the rankings show how strong UNO is at the graduate level.  

Bartle says the rankings are done by deans and directors of graduate programs.  Five programs within public administration were recognized, including criminology and criminal justice, social work and business.

OPS to begin interviews of six candidates for superintendent

The Omaha Public Schools board will begin interviews this Friday of six candidates for superintendent.

Board members met Monday afternoon with consultant Marvin Edwards of Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates. Last fall, the board selected the Chicago-based firm to lead the search for OPS' new superintendent. John Mackiel plans to retire at the end of this school year after nearly four decades with OPS.

Board members will interview candidates Friday and Saturday. They'll narrow the list to three finalists, who will be interviewed next weekend.
