Omaha metro gets 9 to 12 inches of snow from winter storm

The season's first significant winter storm left behind nine to 12 inches of snow in the Omaha metro area.

The National Weather Service says 8 inches of snow was reported at Offutt Air Force Base, and 9 inches in Omaha.  In southwest Iowa, Pacific Junction received 10 inches of snow. 

Road conditions are expected to remain hazardous. Before traveling, check www.511.nebraska.gov and www.511ia.org for road conditions.

5th Annual Heartland Walk for Warmth takes place this week

The 5th Annual Heartland Walk for Warmth takes place tomorrow (Thursday) at 6:00 p.m. at Westroads Mall.

Kathy O’Hara, Spokesperson for United Way of the Midlands, says the event helps raise funds for energy assistance programs.  She says the organization has seen a 30% increase in requests for help with energy assistance over the past year.  O’Hara says the Walk for Warmth is a one mile walk outside.  She says even though it’s been a milder winter, it can get cold in the house when you can’t afford to turn the heat on…

Authorities investigating death of Ralston's Fire Chief

Omaha Police are investigating the death of Ralston’s Fire Chief.

Authorities were called to 6902 Pine Street around 7:30 AM for a report of a down party. There, they found the body of 40-year-old Kyle Ienn hanging from a bridge. Ienn was a Ralston firefighter for more than 20 years. He was named Fire Chief in 2000.

Lutheran Family Services celebrates 120th birthday

Lutheran Family Services is holding a yearlong celebration in honor of its 120th birthday. 

LFS began as two orphanages in 1892.  Spokeswoman Bev Carlson says since then, the human care organization has served children in multiple capacities.  LFS offers assistance with adoption, foster care services, and childhood behavioral health.  Carlson says the organization will hold a celebration on Saturday, September 22nd that’s meant to be a reunion

Red Cross responded to more than 400 regional disasters in 2011

Omaha, NE – The Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to more than 400 disasters last year.

The Nebraska/southwest Iowa Region's disaster response included opening 11 shelters and providing more than 23,000 meals to people displaced by Missouri River flooding.
