Nutrition's Role in Cancer Prevention

Five researchers from Nebraska and Oklahoma will study the role of nutrition in cancer prevention.  The researchers each received a $50,000 seed grant to conduct their research over a one year period. 

Grants were awarded through a collaborative project between the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition in Omaha and the Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City.

Study finds workforce discrimination prevalent in LGBT community

Researchers at UNMC’s College of Public Health released an initial community report last June on issues surrounding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender individuals. 

Dr. Christopher Fisher is an Assistant Professor in the College of Public Health. He says the goal of the study was to examine the physical, mental, social and sexual health of the LGBT community.

American Red Cross to Host Mass Care Boot Camp

The American Red Cross of Nebraska/Southwest Iowa is holding a Mass Care Boot Camp for volunteers February 27th through March 4th.

Tina Labellarte, CEO for the American Red Cross’ Nebraska/Southwest Iowa region, says last year, volunteers responded to events in 46 states.  

Because events can happen quickly, she says it’s important that volunteers are properly trained ahead of time.  The Red Cross’ Mass Care Boot Camp offers training in a shorter period of time.

UNMC is offering a doctoral degree in epidemiology

UNMC is offering a new doctoral degree in epidemiology.

Dr. Dana Loomis, Professor and Chair of Department of Epidemiology, says this is the fifth doctoral program in UNMC’s College of Public Health.  

Dr. Loomis says epidemiology is the basic science of public health, providing knowledge that’s important for all the health disciplines.

It also generates scientific data that helps in decision making across health fields.  Dr. Loomis says it is a broad field that’s not just about investigating disease outbreaks.

Senator Nordquist introduces state-based health insurance marketplace

Senator Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha recently introduced LB 835 into the legislature.

The bill would create a state-based Nebraska health insurance marketplace.  Senator Nordquist says under the Affordable Care Act, each state is required to establish a healthcare exchange or the federal government will create one for them.
